Script Frenzy 2012
Because this is the only place on the web where I can post this without feeling like a major dork. Even though there's no special prize or recognition for winning and regardless of being one of the thousands of winners, I still feel good. The prize is the body of work and every story starts off as a draft.100 pages to a script in one month is impressive, but as Hemingway put it, "The first draft to anything is shit." Since I'm working on my own TV show, I combined the pilot with the second episode. Now, it's all about crossing that finish line. I'm in Act Three, which is probably the best part of the episode. Then I'll move on to tweaking, wherein I attempt to edit without adding to the page count. The days of writing 180+ page monsters are over.
It was a good month, even though I didn't tackle the script as feverishly as last year. Working from a treatment helped tremendously. I think the main thing I got out of it was establishing a voice. Not just with the characters, but narration. Yes, scripts are blueprints for directors and actors, but it's a story none the less. As much as I hear about people in the entertainment business who hate reading, I figured if my script were to ever fall in the proper hands, it should be an entertaining read in addition to Fade in and Cut to.
